About This Spot
A wave-riding destination on Sumbawa's south coast at Hu'u/Lakey Beach, not a flatwater or freestyle spot. Best wind runs late July through October on the SE/E dry-season trades: locals report ~85% of days over 13kt in August and September and ~70% in October, with June–July building and inconsistent. Wind typically funnels into Hu'u Bay and kicks in around midday once the thermal builds — it can blow 15–20kt in the bay while only 7–8kt sits over Lakey itself, so check the funnel, not just the village. Typical kited days are 13–25kt; bring an 8–12m quiver plus a small kite for the strong afternoons. Water is open ocean swell over coral reef — chop and sizeable waves are the norm (commonly 1.5–3m, occasionally 4–5m); flat water does not exist here. Direction at the Peak/Pipe is cross- to slightly offshore (prevailing E), which sets up clean wave faces but means a downwind blow takes you out to sea, so self-rescue skills and a reliable kite matter. Suits advanced to expert wave riders: Lakey Peak is a fast hollow A-frame, Lakey Pipe is shallow and expert-only, while Nungas to the south offers longer, smoother faces but strong current. Mornings belong to surfers; kiters generally wait until the wind fills in and the left-hander clears. Launch from the beach at Lakey, picking channels through the reef — low tide exposes sharp coral and some entries are rock-strewn, so reef boots are wise. Hazards: shallow coral, low-tide reef exposure, strong point current (especially Nungas), the offshore component, and a crowded surf lineup to respect. Access is via Bima airport (BMU) then ~2–2.5hr drive; basic surf-camp lodging lines Lakey Beach.
