About This Spot
South Lombok's kite base, but the riding is mostly in the lagoons east of Kuta town rather than off the tourist beach itself. Season is the SE trade-wind dry season: May–October, peaking June–September with steady cross/side-onshore southeasterlies of roughly 15–20 kn, thermally reinforced and most reliable midday to ~5pm. Outside this window (Nov–Apr NW monsoon) you can get windy days but they're gusty, squally and wet-season-unreliable — don't plan a trip around them. Water state depends on the spot. The marquee flat-water is Kaliantan/Ekas further east (~30–45 min): a wide, shallow, reef-fringed lagoon ~500 m across, flat near shore turning to chop and kickers as it builds — great for freeride/freestyle and learning, not a clean wave spot despite appearances. Gerupuk and Tanjung Aan offer lagoon flats inside with reef passes and small wave options outside on the right tide. Kuta beach proper is shallow, reefy and crowded with swimmers/surfers/boats — usable but not ideal to rig. Suits beginners (with a school) through intermediate; advanced riders chase the wave/reef setups. Launch & access: numerous kite schools, rentals and warungs around Kuta, Seger, Tanjung Aan and Gerupuk; many sessions are downwinders or boat/scooter shuttles to the lagoon of the day, so a local guide/school is strongly recommended. Hazards: sharp reef and urchins (book/reef booties), tidal current through lagoon passes, shallow water at low tide, occasional offshore component on some beaches, and crowds plus boat traffic near Kuta. Check local launch permissions. Bring 9–12 m for an 70–80 kg rider in peak season.
