About This Spot

Honest take: West Bay is Roatán's postcard beach — white sand, calm turquoise lagoon, a barrier reef ~100–200 m offshore — but it is NOT a real kite spot, and a kiter should not travel here to ride. The beach sits on the sheltered southwest tip of the island, tucked behind high hills that block the prevailing E/NE Caribbean trades. Locals report usable kite wind only a handful of days per year (one 7-year resident said he'd seen it kited twice; another estimated ~330 days/year with too little wind). The two killers are well documented: not enough wind, and far too many people — West Bay is a packed swimming/snorkeling resort beach with boat traffic, moorings and a shallow reef close in. Treat it as a no-go for kiting, and a hazard-rich one if you try (swimmers, snorkelers, day-trip boats, shallow coral). Where to actually kite on Roatán: the EAST END, ~40–60 min drive away, which faces the trades directly. Camp Bay Beach is the main spot — the island's largest natural beach, with a ~450 m-wide riding zone of clear 2–3 m water inside the reef plus small reef waves/kickers on the outside; suits all levels with a school on site. Flatter, more beginner-friendly water sits upwind at St. Helene harbour and the mangrove flats between Roatán and Helene (≈6 km of flat water, good in ESE/E); Port Royal and Pigeon Cay suit more advanced riders. Season: Caribbean trades blow best Feb–Aug. April–May is the windy peak (often 20+ kt most days); Jun–Aug is the most consistent stretch (frequently 18–25 kt). Mornings softer (12–20 kt E/SE), afternoons stronger (15–30 kt E/NE), typically cranking after ~3 pm. Sep–Jan is lighter and includes hurricane-season risk. Water is warm year-round (~25°C winter, ~29°C summer). Bottom line: visit West Bay for the beach, but plan kiting around the East End spots and check wind direction — anything with west in it shuts the east-end spots down, and east winds shut West Bay's hills around it anyway.
