About This Spot

El Paredón is a black-sand surf village on Guatemala's Pacific coast inside the Sipacate–El Naranjo National Park, a few km east of Sipacate (the country's better-known coastal kite spot). It shares Sipacate's wind and wave regime, so treat it as the same system. This is primarily a SURF town; kiting here is opportunistic rather than a dialed, daily-wind destination — go in with managed expectations. Wind: Guatemala's coastal season runs roughly September–February, with the most usable days reported in October–December and January–February. Wind is a mix of thermal and trade, often light-to-moderate and not bulletproof day to day; bring a big kite (10–14 m) and be ready to wait on weaker afternoons. Direction is variable (commonly E/S/W) and tends to be cross- to cross-onshore — plan launches around that rather than expecting clean side-shore. Water: open Pacific beach break, NOT flat. Expect shorebreak, chop and real swell — typically 3–5 ft, holding 10 ft+ on bigger SW/S/SE pulses. It's a wave/freeride spot for confident riders, best on smaller, organized swell. Skill: intermediate to advanced. Punching out through shorebreak in cross-onshore wind, plus rips, makes it a poor place to learn — beginners should use the inland lakes (Amatitlán/Atitlán). Launch & access: long, wide, almost-deserted black-sand beach with ample room to rig and ride well away from the surf lineup. Reach it ~2–2.5 hrs from Antigua/Guatemala City (La Aurora airport ~100–130 km) via road plus a short boat/ferry across the mangrove canal. Hazards: powerful shorebreak and strong rip currents/undertow; gusty cross-onshore wind; very hot black sand (booties help); protected national park with sea-turtle nesting (respect regs); no full-time in-town kite school (iKiteGt runs trips; lake-based kiteguate). Keep clear of surfers.
