About This Spot
Prasonisi, at the southern tip of Rhodes near Kattavia, is one of Europe's most wind-reliable kite spots and a genuine two-in-one venue. A sand isthmus joins a small islet to the mainland, splitting the water into a flat lagoon on the lee (east) side and an open-Aegean wave side on the windward (west) side, so one wind serves two completely different playgrounds. Wind: the thermal Meltemi (N/NW) blows April–October but is dependably strong June–September, peaking in July–August when it works 6–7 days/week and windless days are rare (2–3 a month). Local topography funnels it (Venturi/jet effect), so Prasonisi is regularly the windiest place on the island — typically 18–30 kn; add ~4–5 kn to forecasts (Windguru/Windfinder). Common kite size is 9 m, occasionally 11 m+ on lighter days. Wind is often up early (06:00–08:00), eases mid-morning, then rebuilds from midday to sunset, so beginners frequently get the calmer mornings. Water & skill: the flat lagoon side is shallow and butter-flat — great for learning, freeride and freestyle — but here the Meltemi is OFFSHORE, blowing you toward the open sea with no rescue, so a downwind safety margin and self-rescue skills are essential. The wave side is onshore with chop and rolling wind-waves/swell for jumping and wave riding, suited to intermediate/advanced riders. Launch & access: remote — a rental car is needed; on-spot accommodation (Oasis, Kedros, Zanetos) and several kite/windsurf schools (e.g. Pro Center, ABC) operate on the sand. Hazards: the flat side gets very crowded with schools, the offshore lagoon wind, occasional algae/plastic near shore on the wave side, and a notably busy, sometimes territorial school scene. Best for intermediates; beginners only with a school in the morning.
