About This Spot
Prassonisi, at the southern tip of Rhodes, is one of the Mediterranean's most reliable wind spots. A sandbar (tombolo) links Rhodes to a small islet, creating two playgrounds back-to-back. The Meltemi blows from the NW/N and is funneled/accelerated by local topography (Venturi/jet effect), so it blows noticeably stronger here than on northern Rhodes — locals say add ~4-5 knots to forecasts. Season: June-September is the core, with July-August the peak (most reliable, only ~2-3 windless days/month). Typical summer wind is 15-30 kn (4-7 Bft), commonly 15-20 kn with stronger 25 kn+ days; 9m is the workhorse, with 11m+ on lighter days. Thermals often build through early afternoon (~13:00-14:00) and hold to sunset; some days also blow early morning. May/June and Sept/Oct are weaker and gustier with more windless days (~7/month possible). Water: the east/lee side is a flat-water lagoon (cross-/side-offshore wind) — dreamy for freestyle and beginners early in the day, but it goes fully offshore with NO rescue service, so it's only safe for confident, self-sufficient riders and is heavily used by windsurf/kite schools. The west/windward side is onshore with wind chop and rolling swell building decent jump/wave ramps — better for advanced riders; launching there is harder. Skill: morning light wind can suit improvers, but crowds, offshore lagoon wind, no rescue and tricky launches mean it's not truly beginner-casual unless you take a school. Hazards: offshore wind on the lagoon side (drift to open sea), strong gusty Venturi wind, busy water shared with windsurfers, occasional algae/debris, and exposed shallows near the sandbar. Access: remote — a rental car is needed (10+ min from nearest village), with parking, schools, tavernas and a wide sandy launch on site. Water temps ~21°C (May) to 27°C (Aug); shorty in midsummer, long suit shoulder season.
