About This Spot

Marmari, on the north coast of Kos, is the island's windiest kite beach and one of the most reliable thermal spots in the Dodecanese. Wind is the cross-/side-onshore Meltemi out of the NW (best on W–WNW–NW), accelerated by a venturi/jet effect between two small islands roughly 8 km offshore — this is why it blows harder here than elsewhere on Kos. It's thermal: typically dead in the morning, filling in around noon, peaking mid-to-late afternoon at 4.5–6 Bft (commonly 15–25, gusting toward 30+ kt), and shutting off sharply at sunset, so plan to be off the water before dusk. Season runs May–October; July–September is most bankable (90%+ windy days), with June and October still scoring well. Typical kite 9–12 m in summer. Water is shallow and tide-independent: a sandbank ~30 m out and shallow standing depth for the first ~50 m make it flat-to-choppy near shore with small wind chop/waves building further out — good for learning and freeride, not a true flat-water lagoon. Suits all levels: beginners use the shallows and the on-site VDWS schools (rescue boats, rental, storage), while intermediates/advanced get the punchy afternoon wind. Launch is off a sandy beach at 'Golden Beach,' ~400 m east of the Caravia Beach Hotel (parking on site, short walk). Hazards: beach erosion has left the strip narrow (limited rig space, trees behind some sections), it gets crowded in high season with three big hotels nearby, and you'll share water with swimmers — kiting is banned in front of the main swimming beach (zoned since 2011) and the permitted kite zone was pushed downwind to a narrow ~10 m strip, so respect local flags/zoning. No significant reef or strong current reported.
