Fehmarn (Gold)

About This Spot

Fehmarn is Germany's premier kite island, jutting far into the Baltic so it catches wind from every direction while the mainland sits becalmed — there's almost always a working beach somewhere on the island. Coordinates point to Gold, the flagship spot on the flat, shallow west coast near Wallnau/Strukkamp. Best Apr–Nov; core season May–Sep with steady 15–25 kt and summer thermals topping up light days. Autumn brings the strongest, most frequent wind but colder water; winter is rideable in a 6/5 with hood/gloves/boots. Water temps run ~8–12°C in Apr/May (5/4 wetsuit min) to 18–22°C in Jul/Aug (3/2 or shorty). GOLD (SW/W/NW, side-onshore): a small ~300m sandy beach fronting a huge standing-depth lagoon — you can ride hundreds of metres out and stay waist-to-chest deep. Flat to light chop, textbook for beginners and freestyle/flatwater riders. Surf school and café on site. Hazards: scattered stones/rocks in the shallows (booties help), limited grass parking, and heavy summer crowds shared with windsurfers — kiters use the designated kite zone ~100m north of the windsurf area. Other island options: WULFENER HALS (SE) has a flat, shallow bay plus small seaside waves, but strict rules — free kiting only 18:00–10:00, daytime reserved for schools; W wind is gusty and the bay fills with windsurf beginners. GOLLENDORF (SW) is flat and shallow with rocks at the waterline. GRÜNER BRINK (N/NE) is scenic but inside a nature reserve: kite only in marked zones and respect bird-breeding closures. WULFEN/Katharinenhof (S) offer more space and small onshore waves. Verdict: ideal for beginners and intermediates wanting reliable wind and forgiving flat shallows, with enough beaches to chase any direction. Downsides are cold-ish Baltic water, summer crowds, zone/time regulations, and stones underfoot. Bring a quiver — light thermals and punchy autumn fronts both happen.
