About This Spot

Baltic Sea island that is Germany's premier kite destination, with 15+ spots covering nearly every wind direction — pick the coast that's offshore-side for the day. Season runs April–October; May–September is peak, but high summer (Jul–Aug) brings frequent light/no-wind days, so spring and autumn are statistically more reliable for stronger, more consistent wind. Dominant winds: NW/W from passing lows, and E during stable highs. Water is cold: 4/3 in summer, 5/4+5/6 with hood/boots shoulder season; rideable Apr–Nov. Flatwater hubs (south coast): Gold and Wulfener Hals offer huge knee-to-chest-deep standing lagoons hundreds of metres out — ideal for beginners/improvers and freestyle, best in S–W (Gold) to SW–W winds. The Wulfener Hals bay separates flat lagoon from a choppy/small-wave seaside, so all levels ride together. Note the strict regulation here: kiting at Wulfener Hals/Wulfen is generally only allowed 18:00–10:00 (daytime reserved for school lessons), so confirm current times locally. Grüner Brink (north): flat standing water plus small waves, works on N/NE/E; it borders a nature reserve (NSG) — stay east of the markers, no riding in protected bird zones. Orth: shallow beginner bays (avoid the Spitzenorth peninsula, conservation). Advanced/wave spots include Presen (N, rocky shore break), Meschendorf, Altenteil and Püttsee (deep water, current, no standing). Launch & access: most beaches have parking, a seasonal beach fee (Kurtaxe), schools and facilities at Burgtiefe/Südstrand. Hazards: cold water, stony/rocky bottoms at several spots, crowds in summer, strong currents and shore break on exposed coasts, and onshore-gusty conditions near low-pressure systems. Kiting is banned on Burger Binnensee (windsurf/SUP only) except school lessons. Respect the many nature-reserve zones — they are actively enforced.
