Saint-Leu

About This Spot

Saint-Leu sits on Réunion's dry, leeward west coast and is famous for 'La Gauche', a world-class left reef break — not as a prime kite spot. It is only marginally kiteable: the town lies in the wind shadow (dévent) of the island's massif, so the SE trade winds (alizés) that power Réunion are often blocked here. It works mainly on a S–SSE flow or, in austral summer, on N–NW wind; locals rate it as rarely good and for confirmed riders only. For dependable wind, head to Trou d'Eau / l'Hermitage–La Saline (north) or l'Étang-Salé and Saint-Pierre (south). Season: trades are most consistent and strongest in the austral winter, roughly May–November (also the driest period). Dec–April is hotter and more variable, brings N–NW/thermal winds, and is cyclone-swell season. Water/skill: no protected lagoon barrier here. Relatively flat water close in, but an exposed reef break outside with powerful, regular swell of ~1–2.5 m. This is an advanced wave/freeride spot, not for beginners. Launch/access: beach launch from Saint-Leu plage is PROHIBITED; use the launch at the ravine mouth on the north entrance of town. Launch is sketchy — pebble/rock shelf, you wade in to launch and usually need help to land. Bring thin reef booties for coral and sea urchins. Hazards: SHARKS are the dominant risk — Réunion's west coast has had numerous fatal bull/tiger-shark attacks; a 2013 prefectural order bans surf/bodyboard/swimming in the 300 m coastal strip outside the lagoon and monitored zones, and a surfer was killed off Saint-Leu in 2019. Also: shallow coral, side-/offshore wind tendencies, gusty channels, marine-park restrictions, and heavy surfer traffic at La Gauche — respect priority. Come for the waves; kite only with local knowledge and on the right wind.
