About This Spot

Safaga is a reliable, year-leaning-summer Red Sea spot ~50 km south of Hurghada (45 min from HRG airport), best known for warm water and flat, shallow lagoons that make it a top beginner-to-intermediate destination while still offering freeride/freestyle/slalom for advanced riders. Wind: prevailing N/NW thermal that reinforces the gradient. Season runs roughly March/April through October, peaking June–September; operators report a historical ~80% kiteable rate May–Oct with very few wind-free days. Typical strength 15–25 kt, often stronger midsummer. Daily pattern matters: wind is side-OFFshore in the morning (blowing from the left as you face the sea), then clocks to side-shore around midday and stays steady into the afternoon. November–March is unreliable and cooler. Water: flat and shallow close to shore — knee-to-hip standing areas at the lagoons make self-rescue and learning easy; it gets choppier the further out you go, especially in the windier afternoons. No real sandy beach at the main ION Club launch, but the launch itself is easy and well-supported. Nearby flat-water options: Tobia lagoon (~4 km), Lost Lagoon (~10 km south, huge standing area, single-school = uncrowded), and Soma Bay (~5–7 km upwind/north), a large, safe bay popular with foilers. Skill level: excellent for beginners and improvers thanks to the shallow lagoons and school cover; advanced riders get reliable summer wind and space. Hazards: coral/reef is widespread across the bay and lagoon floor — booties are strongly recommended, especially for beginners. The morning side-offshore phase means you should kite with school/boat cover until it turns side-shore. Otherwise low current and generally uncrowded compared with Soma Bay or El Gouna.
