About This Spot

Ras Sudr is Egypt's premier flatwater/beginner kite zone, a ~15km strip of shallow lagoons and beach on the Gulf of Suez ~190-200km (2.5-3hr drive) from Cairo — the closest reliable kiting to the capital, which keeps it busy with Egyptian riders on weekends. Wind: predominantly N/NW thermal wind, side-shore to cross-onshore (blows you back toward the beach at most centers — safe), driven by the same Etesian-type pattern as the Red Sea. Season runs roughly March-November; reliability is 80%+ March-October and peaks in summer (Jun-Sep), windiest late Aug-Sep when it regularly tops 30kt. Typical strength 15-25kt, so 9-12m kites. Many schools shut Nov-Mar (cooler, less wind, renovation season). Water: highly tide-dependent. At low tide you get up to ~2km of waist-deep, butter-flat water — ideal for first lessons and flatwater freestyle. Several man-made lagoons are perfectly flat and enclosed (great for kids/beginners); a larger natural lagoon mixes flat and chop; the open sea ~200m out is flat and shallow. High tide brings more chop and small jumpable bumps. Essentially no swell. Skill: best for beginners and intermediates/freestylers chasing flat water; advanced riders use it for tricks rather than waves or big air. Launch & access: wide sandy beach with easy launch at numerous centers/camps (Kitesurfing Village, Soul, Kite Buzz, Matarma Bay, Club Mistral/FLY, Paradise) spread along the coast — a car/taxi helps to move between them. Gear, lessons and rescue boats available. Hazards: gusty 30kt+ days in peak season; a few launches face offshore angles (use a school with a rescue boat); crowds at popular centers in summer/weekends; scattered reef/rocky patches at some breaks and shallow water at low tide — watch fins and footing. Otherwise an unusually safe, obstacle-light spot.
