About This Spot

Dahab sits on the Gulf of Aqaba, where northerly wind funnels between the Sinai and Saudi mountains and is boosted by daytime thermals — roughly 250-300 kiteable days a year. The main kite area is the shallow Dahab (Laguna/Mashraba) lagoon at the south end of town. Season: reliable spring through autumn. Summer (Jun-Aug) has the highest wind probability (~80%, often 20-30 kt) and blows most of the day, but is fiercely hot and quieter on tourists; Sep-Dec is the popular sweet spot with steady 18-25 kt thermals that usually fill in late morning and ease by mid-afternoon. Winter (Jan-Feb, Nov-Dec) is the weakest/least reliable (~50-60%) and best avoided if wind is your priority. Water: the lagoon is flat, warm and knee-to-hip deep — excellent for beginners and freestyle; small swell forms further offshore but rarely breaks inside. Side-shore wind at the main launch areas; note some inner-lagoon sections blow offshore, so stay aware. Skill: ideal for beginners and freestylers in the lagoon (large 300x500m flat area with protective sandbank); advanced riders use Center 2 (small standing area, side-shore) and open spots like Bay View. Launch: sandy beach launches run by kite schools/centers; dinghy/boat assist is common. Access: ~1 hr taxi from Sharm El Sheikh airport. Hazards: the lagoon is strongly tide-dependent — at summer low tide usable windows can shrink to ~4 hrs and very shallow exits risk fins/board damage; living coral reef fringes some beaches (Bay View) so reef boots help; thermal wind makes forecasts unreliable; popular centers get crowded in peak season. Gear: pack smaller kites (7-10m) for the strong summer thermals. Bring sun protection and book through a local center for the best launch zones.
