Dahab Blue Lagoon

About This Spot

Remote flat-water lagoon inside the Ras Abu Galum protectorate, roughly 15 km north of Dahab town on the Gulf of Aqaba. It is a separate, wilder spot from the in-town Dahab Lagoon (Harry Nass): wide white-sand beach, turquoise water that is knee- to hip-deep and dead flat behind a sandbank, backed by desert mountains and basic Bedouin camps. WIND: prevailing N–NNW thermal/gradient wind funneled (venturi effect) between the Sinai mountains and the Saudi coast, so it blows cleaner and stronger than in town. Famously reliable — locals cite ~300 days/yr over 15 kt. Peak season is April–November with near-daily 15–30 kt, many 20+ kt days; summer (May–Sep) is the windiest with hot air and warm water. Dec–March is less consistent, ~12–20 kt on rideable days. Typical kites 7–10 m in season, 10–13 m in winter. Wind is side-onshore to side-shore on the main launch — generally safe, not offshore. WATER/SKILL: flat and shallow makes it ideal for beginners and freestyle/foil; the standing-depth lagoon is a genuine learner's paradise, while the strong steady wind and big space also suit intermediates and advanced riders. ACCESS: no real road — reach it by 4x4 over the desert, by boat/taxi-boat from Dahab, on foot, or by camel from the Ras Abu Galum trailhead; most riders book through a Dahab kite school that handles transport, gear and a beach base. Windsurf and kite zones are split by a large sandbank. HAZARDS: remoteness is the main risk — limited facilities, no formal rescue or medical beyond the camps, so don't ride alone or self-rescue downwind. Napoleon reef lies downwind where wind accelerates (gusts to ~30 kt) and offers wave riding but is a reef hazard; watch for sharp coral, urchins and rocky/pebbly patches at the shoreline. It is a protected national park, so respect environmental rules and pack out rubbish. Crowds are low compared to town. Bring water, sun protection and cash.
