About This Spot

Encuentro is a wave-riding spot ~3 km / 5 min west of Cabarete on the DR's north coast — the region's premier reef surf break that doubles as a kite spot when the thermal fills in. This is NOT a beginner or freestyle venue: it's an exposed reef break for advanced, strapless/wave-board riders who want clean swell without Cabarete's crowds. Wind: cross/side-shore trade + thermal, blowing roughly side-on to the main peak (good wave-riding positioning). It's an afternoon spot — the thermal typically kicks in around midday/2pm and runs to ~6pm at 18–25 kt. Cabarete is windy ~250–300 days/yr. Two seasons: strongest and most reliable is the summer thermal (roughly May/Jun–Sep, often 18–28 kt daily), plus a solid Dec–Apr winter season (lighter/more variable, ~12–25 kt). Oct–Nov is the rainy, least reliable window. Mornings are usually too light to kite — that's the glassy surf window. Water: swell, not flat. Exposed reef catches every north/NE swell with left and right breaks; 3–6 ft is typical and winter can deliver heavy 3–8 ft barrels. Suits riders who want to ride waves, not learn or do flatwater freestyle. Launch & access: 10-min drive from Cabarete; small beach with surf-school traffic. Self-launch/land over a narrow beach is awkward — landing often means standing in shallow water near reef. Many riders do the downwinder from Kite Beach/Cabarete into Encuentro. Hazards: shallow coral (comes within ~0.5 m of the surface on inside sections) and abundant sea urchins — reef booties are essential. Avoid dropping your kite on the downwinder: there are rocky stretches with no beach exit. Strong surf, current and crowded lineups shared with surfers; respect surf etiquette. Stay clear of the inside reef. Best for confident riders comfortable launching/landing in tight, hazardous conditions.
