About This Spot

Kite Beach is the dedicated kite zone ~1.5 mi (2.4 km) west of Cabarete town, the heart of Caribbean kiteboarding. Wind is exceptionally reliable: roughly 250–300 days/year of kitable breeze. Direction is a side-onshore E/ENE/ESE trade, reinforced by a strong afternoon thermal that typically fills in around midday (12–1pm) and builds to 6pm. Best months are mid-December through mid-August. Summer (Jun–Aug) is the peak 'nuking' season, often 20–30 kt (9–12m kites); winter (Jan–Apr) runs lighter and gustier with frontal influence, ~14–25 kt; Sep–Nov is the slack/hurricane window (~10–20 kt, least reliable, watch tropical systems). Mornings are often light — this is an afternoon-thermal spot, so don't expect dawn sessions. Water: a reef sits ~300 m offshore, sheltering an inside zone that runs flat-to-choppy and shallow — good for freestyle, learning and progression. Beyond the reef you get small wave/swell, building to proper waves in winter with a light current — fun for wave riders and strapless. Skill level: suits all levels. Beginners benefit from the shallow, flatter inside water and the dense concentration of kite schools (lessons, gear, rescue). The wave/reef zone and strong summer thermal reward intermediate-to-advanced riders. Launch & access: sandy beach launch lined with kite schools, bars and condos; easy walk-in access. The usable launch corridor is only medium-sized and shrinks noticeably in peak July–August crowds, when it gets busy and tight — palm trees behind the beach are a real launch/landing hazard then. Stay organized and use assisted launches. Hazards: the offshore reef has fire coral and sea urchins — wear reef booties and avoid walking it at low water. Winter swell brings a small longshore current. Crowds (downwind traffic) are the main summer risk. Side-onshore wind means self-rescue drifts you to the beach, which is reassuring. Warm water 25–30°C year-round, no wetsuit needed.
