About This Spot

Arta Plage (Arta Beach) sits on the south shore of the Gulf of Tadjoura in Arta Region, ~45-50 km from Djibouti City. It's a small sandy crescent backed by arid hills, doubling as a popular family/snorkeling beach and a seasonal whale-shark base (Nov-Feb), so expect tourists, fishermen and boats. Wind: Djibouti has two regimes. The reliable kite window is the hot summer (roughly June-Aug, peaking June-July), when a strong SW desert thermal (the khamsin) fills in most afternoons - typically building around midday and dropping in the evening. It can be gusty and sand-laden, and during sandstorm episodes spike well over 40-50 kt. Summer is brutally hot (40C+). Oct-May is the cooler, more comfortable season but wind is lighter and less consistent; operators run kite excursions in the wider gulf (e.g. Ghoubbet) Oct-May rather than relying on Arta daily. Water is warm year-round (~26-30C); boardshorts only. Water state: flat to light chop in the shallows close to the beach, with small wind chop/swell when the thermal is up - generally a flat-to-bump spot rather than a wave spot. Level: best for intermediate to advanced riders comfortable in gusty thermal wind and self-rescue; not a beginner/teaching spot given the remoteness and reef. Launch & access: small sandy launch. By road it's ~1.5-1.75 hr from the capital with the final 10-12 km a rough gravel track needing a 4x4; many arrive by boat (~45 min) from Djibouti City. No kite school, shop, water or rescue on site - bring all gear, water and spares; lessons/charters are organized from Djibouti City. Hazards: coral, rocks and shells underfoot (wear booties) in shallow water; gusty/squally thermal and possible summer sandstorms; intense heat and sun; remote with very limited rescue/medical; gulf currents; and crowds of swimmers/snorkelers plus whale-shark boats in season - give them room.
