Varadero sits on the 25 km Hicacos Peninsula on Cuba's north coast, ~2 hrs east of Havana and 30 min from Juan Gualberto Gómez airport (VRA). It's a long, white-sand, turquoise-water beach rather than a single launch — the main kite zone is the less-crowded eastern end near Barceló Marina Palace, away from packed hotel-front beaches. Wind: best and most reliable Nov–Apr (dry season). Winter cold fronts deliver N/NNE/NE/ENE winds, while spring and autumn high pressure brings steady ENE trades. Typical kiteable days run 12–25 kts, averaging ~15–20 kts, often building in the afternoon. December–March is the sweet spot; even shoulder months see roughly 2–4 kiteable days/week. Summer (May–Sep) is lighter and less consistent, with hurricane-season risk. Wind is largely side-onshore, getting more cross-shore toward the eastern beachfront — generally safe directions for self-rescue back to the beach. Water: shallow and crystal clear, flat to choppy near shore with small waves further out; gets choppier as wind builds. Large shallow areas at low tide (clear ~50 m out) make it forgiving. Great for beginners, freeride, freestyle, foiling; long downwinders (up to 25 km) possible along the peninsula, plus flatter sections by the small offshore island to the east. Skill: beginner-friendly to advanced. Suits learners thanks to space, shallow water and steady trades. Hazards: corals/rocks in places (especially low tide on the western/town stretch — favor sandy eastern launches), swimmers and bathers in front of resorts, and busy hotel beaches where launching is discouraged. Local gear/repair is scarce, so bring your own. Schools operate but Cuban regulations can be restrictive; carry cash (USD/EUR).
