Zlatni Rat ("Golden Horn") is a pebble spit at Bol on the south coast of Brač, sitting in the Hvar Channel — one of Croatia's most reliable thermal-wind venues. The engine here is the maestral, a thermal NW/W sea breeze that funnels down the channel between Brač and Hvar and accelerates around the tip of the spit. It typically fills in late morning to early afternoon (around midday–14:00), builds through the afternoon and dies toward evening, giving roughly 2–6 hours of rideable wind on most good days. Strength is usually 15–25 knots (gusting higher on strong days), best and most consistent June–September; May and October still work but are cooler and less reliable. Reliability is good but not guaranteed — it's a thermal, so calm/weak days happen, and you'll want to watch Windguru/Windfinder. Wind relative to the spit is broadly side to side-on. Water: mornings tend to be flattest (good for learning/foiling), turning to light chop and small wind-driven waves as the maestral strengthens in the afternoon; occasional channel swell but no real waves. Best for intermediate and advanced riders who can handle gusty thermal conditions and a busy spot; complete beginners should go through a school. Launch & access: the spit fronts the town of Bol with paved access, parking, toilets, showers, restaurants and several kite/windsurf centres on the adjacent Borak/Bol beach (e.g. Big Blue, Active Bol). Hazards: heavy summer beach and water crowds (Zlatni Rat is a top tourist beach), swimmers, windsurfers and boat traffic in the channel; pebble/stony beach (booties help); gusty, shifty wind near the tip. Regulations matter — kitesurfing on the main Zlatni Rat beach is restricted/prohibited in peak season (roughly July–August), with launching and landing channelled through designated kite schools (day fees ~€20–25). Check current local rules and launch only from approved areas.
