Bahía Salinas, on Costa Rica's far-NW Pacific coast near La Cruz and the Nicaraguan border, is the country's premier kite spot. Playa Copal ("kite beach") is the main launch, with Papaturro nearby. Wind is a NE trade wind funneled and accelerated by a mountain venturi off Lake Nicaragua, so it blows side-onshore and often stronger than the forecast. Season runs with the dry season Nov–May, peaking Dec–Mar; Jan–Feb are windiest (averaging ~23 kt, gusting 30+). Expect 60%+ windy days in season and near-daily wind (80%+) Dec–Feb. The 8m is the everyday kite; bring smaller gear for the peak. Note the wind is gusty and can swing 15–35 kt within minutes — manageable but not glassy-steady. Water: the bay is sheltered by Isla Bolaños/Isla Copal and an outcropping, keeping it flat-to-choppy even when nuking. Tidal range is large (~3 m); chop is least and the beach widest at low tide, while high tide narrows the launch and shrinks the takeoff zone. Sandy, shallow entry with warm water (boardshorts most of the year). Skill level: suits all levels. Flat, shallow water, no strong currents and several schools make it good for beginners/intermediates progressing, while the strong, consistent wind keeps experienced riders happy. It stays uncrowded — rarely more than ~20 kiters out. Hazards: at low tide a ~50 m shallow shelf (15–20 cm) holds scattered rocks and shells — wear booties. Stingrays are present, so shuffle your feet. The biggest catch is the venturi wind: it can over-power fast and is gusty, so size down and watch the squally edges. The spot is remote with limited infrastructure; it's ~40 min–1 hr from Liberia (LIR) airport. Respect local/wildlife rules; no notable kiting bans reported.
