About This Spot

Costa Rica's premier kite spot, in the far NW Pacific corner near the Nicaraguan border, ~1hr from Liberia (LIR) airport. The main launch is Playa Copal on the south shore of the bay; Playa Papaturro is a nearby alternative. Wind machine: NE trade winds amplified by a mountain venturi plus thermal effect, so it blows harder and more reliably than standard Windguru forecasts suggest. Season runs late-Nov to April (dry season), with some wind into May. Reliability is exceptional — ~60%+ windy days in shoulder months and >80–90% Dec–Feb (a typical season logs only a handful of no-wind days). Jan–Feb are windiest, averaging ~23 kt and frequently 25–30 kt; come prepared with smaller kites (7–10m common). Wind is side-onshore (~45° to the beach), the safe direction for self-rescue and learning, but it's gusty in a particular way: not punchy, instead arriving in long 'sets' like waves, so rig for the gusts and expect to feel underpowered between them. Water is warm (~26–28°C, no wetsuit) and mostly flat in the protected bay with no real current. At medium-to-low tide a dry reef forms a natural breakwater upwind of the launch, giving buttery flat water for speed/freestyle; at high tide the beach narrows and small chop builds (Feb can see ~knee-high wind waves — minor). Suits all levels: shallow entry and steady wind make it a strong learning/progression spot, while the power and flat water reward freeriders and freestylers. Hazards: sharp, slippery stones and shells at the launch (water shoes strongly advised); narrow beach at high tide; gusty offshore patches on off days (a support boat is advisable and most schools use one); generally uncrowded (often only 10–15 kiters). Abundant wildlife (turtles, dolphins, rays). Bring a quiver and a downwind plan.
