La Boquilla is Cartagena's main kite beach, a former fishing village now swallowed by the city's northern sprawl, sitting on a long sandy Caribbean strip between the sea and the Ciénaga de la Virgen lagoon, ~10 min from the historic center and ~5 min from Rafael Núñez airport. WIND/SEASON: Driven by the NE Caribbean trade winds. Reliable season is roughly mid-December through April, with March often the most consistent; December-March typically delivers 15-25 kt (gusts to ~25 at peak). A classic thermal day is light until ~11am, building steadily through the afternoon and strongest before sunset. Direction starts onshore/side-onshore and clocks more sideshore as it strengthens, so launches and self-rescue back to the beach are easy. May-June fades; Sept-Oct-Nov are essentially dead (count on ~1 rideable day/week). Bring 9-11m for the season, pack a 12m for early-season light mornings. WATER/LEVEL: Shallow, sandy, choppy bay water — flat-ish near shore, building to bump and small wind-swell outside. This is a freeride/freestyle spot, not a wave spot, though minor swell appears at times. Genuinely good for beginners (shallow, steady cross-on wind, several schools with gear, storage and rescue) and roomy enough for intermediates working on jumps/freestyle. LAUNCH/ACCESS: Wide beach with ample room to rig and launch; easy cab/Uber from town, rental car handy. Multiple kite schools (e.g. Nativo, Caribe) cluster here for lessons, rentals and storage. Restaurants nearby. HAZARDS: Cross-onshore is forgiving but the beach is shared — swimmers, beach vendors, sun-bathers and local fishermen with small boats/nets, so stay clear of crowded sections and keep lines off people. Afternoon build can over-power you fast near sunset; respect your kite size. Urban-edge water quality near the lagoon outlet can be mediocre after rain. No reef. Theft/petty crime applies as in any Cartagena beach area — don't leave gear unattended.
