About This Spot

El Rodadero is Santa Marta's most developed urban beach, ~5 km south of the city in a sheltered horseshoe bay. Be realistic: it's a kite-accessible spot rather than a dedicated kite mecca. Locals describe it as a launch with a 'better vibe' than the port, but the cleaner, stronger wind sits a few km south at Playa del Aeropuerto / Pozos Colorados (near Simon Bolivar airport) and Salgar, where cross-shore wind is good for jumping. Treat Rodadero as a base; ride the airport zone for serious sessions. Wind: NE/N Caribbean trade winds ('El Verano' dry season), reliable roughly December-March/April, with shoulder wind into May. Average 15-25 kt, typically building in the afternoon. April-November is the wet season and largely unreliable/light (single-digit windy days per month). Bay shelter cuts the wind somewhat versus exposed beaches. Water: protected bay, so it stays relatively calm - chop with small wind waves rather than flat or true swell. Few strong currents inside the bay (unlike exposed Tayrona beaches). Suits intermediate riders comfortably; not ideal for first lessons due to space. Launch & access: easy road access, hotels, restaurants and water-sports vendors right on the sand - convenient logistics. But the beach is small and one of Colombia's most crowded tourist beaches, so launch/landing space is tight and bystanders are the main hazard. Also watch boats, jet-skis, swim zones and wavebreakers/jetty structures. Wind can be gusty/cross-onshore behind buildings. Regulations: kiting on a packed swimming beach is socially marginal; go early or off-season, mind swimmers, and confirm any local permit/zoning with a school. Verdict: good for a relaxed session or a travel base, but commit to the airport/Salgar spots for consistent, less-crowded kiting.
