About This Spot

Remote desert kite spot on a headland at Colombia's northern tip, in Wayuu indigenous territory. Famous for relentless trade winds: roughly 300+ kiteable days a year, averaging 25 knots and often 25-35kt. Prime season is December-April (strongest, most consistent; 7-9m kites typical, sometimes smaller). May-June stays rideable but lighter (15-25kt) and gustier. The dead months are October-November, when wind can drop off; it picks back up by December. No wetsuit needed - warm water year-round. Wind is ENE and blows OFFSHORE to side-offshore, which is the spot's defining hazard. Close to the beach (first ~150-200m) the bay is butter-flat and shallow - ideal for learning and freestyle. Further out it turns choppy, and because the wind pushes you out to sea you MUST be able to stay and ride upwind before venturing past the flat zone. This makes the inside great for beginners with a school, but genuinely dangerous for anyone who can't self-rescue or relaunch; ride with a school/boat cover. Launch is off a sandy beach in front of the village; multiple kite schools (e.g. Cabo Kite Center) operate here with lessons, gear and rescue. Access is the real cost: fly to Riohacha (RCH), then a 2-4hr land/4x4 transfer across desert track - go with a transfer/operator, not solo. Expect minimal infrastructure (limited power, basic accommodation, few showers). Hazards: offshore wind, choppy/sea outside the bay, seasonal algae patches with stinging fish, strong sun/wind exposure, and remoteness with little formal rescue beyond the schools. Crowds are low. Best wind is morning and late afternoon; midday can be gusty.
