Pichilemu

About This Spot

Pichilemu is Chile's surf capital and a wave-riding kite destination, not a freeride/flatwater spot. It sits on the open Pacific in central Chile, sharing the same SW thermal/synoptic sea-breeze regime as nearby Matanzas: wind builds late morning (~10-11am) and blows through the afternoon, typically 15-25 kt and often stronger. Season runs roughly Sep-May with the most reliable, near-daily wind Oct-Apr; peak summer Nov-Feb gives the best weather (sunny, warmer air) though water stays cold year-round (Humboldt Current). Bring a 4/3 (3/2 minimum in mid-summer), plus booties and a hood for the rocky points. Water is ocean swell, not flat — expect real waves 1-3 m and powerful left-hand point breaks. Two zones: 'The Point' / La Puntilla in town is a long, clean left but partly wind-sheltered (gusty, side-off tendency), while Infiernillo just south is shorter, faster, hollower and far more exposed to the SW wind, making it the better-powered kite/wave option. Punta de Lobos (~4 km south) is the marquee wave but a heavy, rock-fringed big-wave arena. Suits intermediate-to-advanced and wave-oriented riders. This is committing terrain: rocky reef/point bottoms, strong currents and rips, heavy shorebreak, cold water, and an offshore/side-off component at the sheltered spots that can blow you out to sea. It is primarily a surf town, so lineups get crowded with surfers — respect priority, give waves room, and rig away from swimmers. Self-rescue skills and a safe downwind exit plan are essential; there is little dedicated kite infrastructure, so it favors experienced, self-sufficient travelers. Access to outer breaks can require a short drive/4WD. Check Windguru (spot 98) and Windfinder before committing.
