About This Spot
Horseshoe-shaped bay ("herradura" = horseshoe) on the south side of Coquimbo, immediately south of the commercial port. It is a sheltered, scenic learner/light-wind spot rather than a performance destination. WIND: driven mainly by the thermal southerly/SW sea breeze that builds on sunny afternoons; most reliable in the warm half of the year (roughly Oct–Apr, peaking Dec–Feb). Winter (Jun–Aug) can deliver occasional strong frontal days but is colder and far less consistent. Strength is typically light-to-moderate and notably gusty inside the bay because the surrounding hills break up the flow, so it rarely overpowers — expect to be on bigger kites/board than at exposed coast spots. WATER: protected from Pacific swell, so the bay is calm — mostly flat to light chop, good for water-starts, first jibes and freeride/foil. SKILL: best for beginners and improving intermediates; advanced riders wanting consistent strong wind and waves go elsewhere (Totoralillo to the south for swell, Puclaro reservoir ~80 km inland for flat thermal wind). LAUNCH/ACCESS: sandy beach with easy road access, parking, restaurants and services along the bay; popular for SUP, kayak and swimming. HAZARDS: (1) crowds & non-kite water users (swimmers, paddlers, boats/moorings) — the bay is busy in summer, leave room; (2) gusty, hole-prone wind from the hills; (3) wind has an offshore/side-offshore component on some directions blowing out toward the port mouth — don't go out underpowered or solo, stay inside the bay; (4) water quality can be poor due to proximity to Coquimbo port/urban runoff; (5) port traffic and possible local zoning/permit rules for board sports — check current regulations and respect navigation lanes. Verify the live forecast on Windguru/Windfinder before travelling; consistency here is lower than at dedicated Chilean kite spots.
