About This Spot

A reliable Atacama Desert thermal spot on a long, sheltered bay ~5 km south of Caldera, framed by white sand and clear turquoise water. Wind is a SW–SSW sideshore thermal that builds in the afternoon, typically 15–25 knots and gusting into the low 30s on the strongest days. The season runs roughly July to February, with the most consistent, punchiest wind from November to February; spring/summer afternoons are the safest bet, mornings are often light. Sun is near-constant but water is cold year-round (Humboldt Current, ~15–18°C) — bring a 4/3 or thicker. Water state varies by where you launch. The southern/inner part of the bay (Playa La Piscina) is shallow and flat to lightly chopped, well protected — ideal for beginners, freeride and flat-water sessions. Toward the open bay and Las Machas it picks up chop and small wind-swell. For actual waves, riders head to nearby Caldera beaches (Ramada/Brava/Mansa) and the exposed Copiapó river mouth, which offer bump-and-jump and a wave wrapping into the bay for intermediate/advanced wave riders. Suits all levels: protected flats for learners and schools (Bahía Inglesa Kitesurf, Club Kitel operate here), open water and swell for progression. Access is easy — beach launch with parking, showers, toilets and food nearby, and Desierto de Atacama airport (Caldera) ~15 min away. Hazards: rocks along parts of the shore and in the water, plus boats, moorings and buoys in the bay — scout your launch and downwind line. The big issue is crowds in January–February (Chilean summer holidays) when swimmers and tourists pack La Piscina; ride early/wide and keep clear of bathing zones. No formal kite-specific regulations found, but standard right-of-way and swimmer-avoidance rules apply. Mostly tide-independent.
