About This Spot

Sorobon Beach sits at the mouth of Lac Bay on Bonaire's windward southeast coast and is one of the Caribbean's premier flat-water spots — BUT read this before booking: kiting is banned here. Lac Bay lies inside the Bonaire National Marine Park and is reserved exclusively for windsurfing and wing foiling. The ONLY legal kite spot on the island is Atlantis (Kite) Beach on the leeward southwest coast (~12.04, -68.27), a 15–20 min drive away, where a special shore corridor is the sole permitted launch/land zone. If you travel to kite Bonaire, base yourself for Atlantis, not Sorobon. Wind: rock-solid easterly trades, ~300 windy days/year. Season runs roughly mid-December to end of August; May–July is the strongest and driest, averaging 17–25 kn, with 14–21 kn typical the rest of the window. Sept–Nov is the lightest, least reliable stretch. Water: Sorobon/Lac Bay itself is a huge, waist-deep (under ~1 m), dead-flat lagoon shielded by an outer reef — ideal learner and freestyle water, but for windsurf/wing only. At the kite spot (Atlantis) the offshore reef knocks down swell, leaving flat-to-light-chop, shallow stand-up depth ~1–2 m, flat 90%+ of the year. Skill: Lac Bay flat water suits all windsurf levels. For kiters, Atlantis suits intermediate-plus; its side-OFFSHORE east wind means beginners must take lessons (boat/rescue cover and schools operate there). Hazards: shallow coral and sea urchins — wear booties and use only marked entry/exit gaps; side-offshore wind at Atlantis pushes you out to sea if you lose power (stay in the corridor, never go downwind toward the reef); strong rip/offshore current at nearby Lac Cai; Marine Park rules strictly enforced (fines), so do not rig a kite at Sorobon.
