About This Spot

Lac Saint-Louis is a wide, shallow lake-like bulge of the St. Lawrence River just southwest of Montreal, and it's the metro area's go-to flat-water kite playground. It is not a single beach but a string of launches around the lake: Baie de Valois (Dorval/Pointe-Claire, ~45.44,-73.78) and Pointe-Claire on the north shore are the classic intermediate spots, while Châteauguay on the south shore is the most beginner-friendly. The western basin near Île Perrot offers more open fetch. Pick your launch by wind direction. Wind is frontal and prevailingly WSW–W, with NW after cold fronts; thermals are weak, so reliability tracks passing weather systems rather than a daily sea breeze. Best, most consistent wind is spring (Apr–May) and fall (Sep–Nov) when fronts roll through; midsummer (esp. Aug) is the lightest, thermal-dependent and often a wait-for-it affair. The lake freezes roughly Dec–Mar — that season is for snowkiting on the ice, not water riding (verify ≥10 cm of solid black ice first). Water is shallow and flat, building to short chop when it pipes up over 18–20 kt; the big fetch makes it excellent for long reaches, freeriding and learning. Tide-independent. Skill: good for improving beginners through advanced, but the wind is notably gusty and hole-y because it's surrounded by suburban land — first-timers are better off taking a lesson, and many launches have a W/offshore component, so self-rescue skills and a buddy matter. Hazards: gusty/offshore-leaning wind, commercial shipping in the St. Lawrence Seaway channel that crosses the lake, powerboats and swimmers, shallow rocky patches at some shores, cold water shoulder-season (wetsuit needed), and crowds/bystanders at public parks Jun–Aug. Check local club guidance for park rules and restricted swim zones before rigging.
