About This Spot

Tramandaí is a flat-water lagoon spot on the Litoral Norte of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil — a very different scene from the famous NE-Brazil wave/downwind spots. The kiting happens on the Lagoa de Tramandaí, not the open Atlantic beach. Schools (e.g. Kitesurf Adventure / Camping Lagoa e Mar, IKO-certified) launch from grassy/sandy lagoon margins with shallow, standable, wave-free water — ideal for beginners and freestyle/freeride progression. The ocean beachfront a few hundred metres east offers chop and shorebreak swell for those wanting waves, but it's less protected. Season: this is a SUMMER spot. Reliable wind runs roughly September through April (spring–autumn), driven by the warm-season NE thermal/synoptic flow that builds through late morning and peaks mid-afternoon; locals report frequent 12–30 kt days in season. Winter (May–Aug) is unreliable and cold, dominated by frontal S/SW 'vento sul' surges that come and go with passing cold fronts. Annual mean wind is light (~7 kt), so the seasonal window matters — come Dec–Mar for the best odds. Water state: predominantly flat to light chop on the lagoon; warm and shallow, friendly for body-dragging and water starts. Skill level: all levels, strongest for beginners/intermediates. Hazards & notes: the lagoon connects to the sea through the Tramandaí river mouth (the 'barra') which carries strong tidal/river current — stay well clear of the channel and the road bridge. NE flow can have offshore/side-offshore components depending on which bank you launch from, so check direction and ride with support. Lagoon depth and sandbars vary. Tramandaí is a busy beach town in the Dec–Feb high season, so expect crowds, swimmers and boat traffic; ride early or pick quieter lagoon sections. A wetsuit/shorty is useful outside peak summer.
