About This Spot

Classic Ceará trade-wind spot ~70-75 km (1.5 hr drive) west of Fortaleza, quieter and more laid-back than nearby Cumbuco. Two distinct riding zones: a shallow, sandy flat-water lagoon (Lagoa da Taíba, ~500 m inland from the beach, waist-deep) and open-ocean wave spots on the beach (Taibinha, Morro do Chapéu). Wind: reliable side-onshore trades from the right (E/SE), blowing ~July to January with near-100% statistical reliability Aug-Nov, the prime window. December starts tapering; the rainy season (roughly Feb-June) drops reliability to ~65%. Wind builds slowly in the morning, is usually solid by 11am-noon, peaks mid-afternoon and softens slightly in the last hour of light. Averages ~20-25 kn — a touch lighter than spots further north/west, so bring bigger kites (typically 9-12m, down to 7m on strong days). Water: lagoon is flat/butter, ideal for beginners, freestyle and foiling, and a protected sandbar keeps it largely tide-independent for consistent conditions. The ocean side has chop to real swell, biggest roughly Oct-May and on higher tides — good for wave/strapless riders. Skill: genuinely all-levels. Lagoon for learning and flat-water progression; beach/wave spots for intermediate-advanced. Launch & access: big sandy areas to rig and launch at both lagoon and beach. No lodging directly on the lagoon — stay in Taíba village a short drive away. Public transport is limited; rent a car/buggy or transfer from Fortaleza. Popular launchpad for downwinders toward Jericoacoara. Hazards: rocks at Morro do Chapéu and submerged boulders in parts of the lagoon; beginners should avoid the eastern wave spot until mid-tide or higher. Side-onshore (not offshore) so self-rescue is manageable. Strong sun, afternoon crowds in peak season, and shorebreak/current on the wave side at high tide. Watch shifting sandbars.
