About This Spot

Pipa is a touristy clifftop village in southern Rio Grande do Norte where kiting is spread across several beaches and lagoons rather than one dedicated launch — pick your spot by tide and skill. Season: SE/ESE trade winds blow July–December, most reliable and strongest July–October (prime mid-July to late October). Expect 15–25 kt side-onshore on good days, lighter and gustier near the cliffs. Off-season (Jan–June) is unreliable. Spots: Praia do Cacimbinha, just south of the village, is the main gathering beach — open sand, good space to launch, consistent wind and dramatic pink-red cliffs, but it's an ocean beach break (chop to small/medium waves) and the beach narrows at high tide. Lagoa de Guaraíras at Tibau do Sul (a few km north) is the beginner/flat-water option: shallow, flat and forgiving especially at low tide, and a classic sunset session — winds can funnel strong there. The true flat-water learner spot is Barra do Cunhaú river mouth, ~30 km south, with flat water inside and small waves at the mouth. Skill: lagoons suit beginners/intermediates and freestyle; Pipa's own ocean beaches (Praia do Amor / village break) are wave-riding, advanced-only — steep coast, rocks in the water, narrow beach at high tide and surfers in the lineup. Water state is strongly tide-dependent (flat / chop / wave). Launch & access: public sandy beaches, kite schools and gear rental in town; reach Cacimbinha by road/trail, Guaraíras by the lagoon shore. Hazards: rocks and shore-dump on the ocean beaches, current at lagoon and river mouths, mixed surfer/swimmer crowds and a busy nightlife-resort vibe, plus gusty cliff lees. Wind here is good but not the bullet-proof, all-day trades of Cumbuco/Gostoso further north — come for the scenery plus kiting, not pure wind stats.
