About This Spot

Classic NE-Brazil trade-wind spot ~85 km west of Fortaleza, less developed and less crowded than Cumbuco/Cauipe. Season runs roughly July–January on side-to-side-onshore E/SE trades, with the most reliable wind mid-September through mid-December (near-daily, 15–25 kt, gusting to ~30 kt in the windiest Sep–Nov window; 12–18 m kites typical, smaller late season). Wind is thermally reinforced and usually fills in around midday, building through the afternoon. Feb–June is the off-season with much lower reliability (~60–65% windy days) — don't plan a trip then. Warm water (25–29°C, boardshorts) and 28–35°C air year-round. The main spot is Quebra Mar, a beach just east of town fronted by a reef ~300 m offshore. It's strongly tide-driven, so check tide tables. Around low tide the reef breaks the swell and a ~200–220 m mirror-flat, knee- to waist-deep sandy-bottomed lagoon forms behind it — excellent for beginners (with a school), freestyle, foiling and wingfoiling, with roughly a 4-hour window (about 2h either side of low). As the tide floods over the reef it becomes a genuine wave spot, with clean reef-break faces up to ~2 m+ (locals rate it the best reef wave in Ceará). Alternatives: Rio Curu estuary west of town (vast shallow flatwater playground at high tide, dries at low) and Catavento, a flatwater spot ~3 km upwind, good for crowd overflow at low tide. Launch is an open sandy beach with space and a beach barraca for food/drink; reach it by a 5–15 min drive (asphalt with potholes/dune track) — most stay in Paracuru town. The classic ~15 km downwinder runs west to Lagoinha along wide dune-backed beaches. Hazards: shallow reef and isolated rocks/reef heads that surface at low tide (cuts, board damage — know the tide and where the reef lies), shore-break and current when the swell is up at high tide, and the inherent risk of riding above reef. Crowds are modest versus Cumbuco but the small flat-water window concentrates riders at low tide.
