Lagoa da Conceição

About This Spot

Large brackish lagoon on the east side of Florianópolis island and one of Brazil's most popular flatwater/freestyle spots. The main kite zone is the southern end (Ponta das Almas / Canto da Lagoa), where the lagoon is shallow, sandy-bottomed and tide-independent with no real current — easy waist/knee-deep water-launching and huge riding area. Water state runs flat to light chop depending on wind strength and fetch; never real swell, so it's ideal for learning, freeride and freestyle, and works for all levels (it's a classic beginner/teaching spot). Wind is thermal + trade driven. Best, most reliable season is spring, roughly September–November. Summer (Dec–Mar) brings stronger but more variable wind, often with southerlies after front passages that are gustier and punchier; winter (Jun–Aug) is the weakest, least reliable stretch. Steadiest wind comes from the N/NNE/NE/ENE (north quadrant); south winds blow harder but gusty. Typical rideable range ~12–25 kn; pack 8–14 m to cover the spread. Reckon on roughly 3–4 windy days/week averaged over the year — not a guaranteed-daily destination, so build in slack days. Water 20s°C; boardshorts/shorty in season. Access is easy: it sits in the Lagoa da Conceição neighborhood ~10 km from central Floripa (car w/ parking, or buses ~320/330), with kite schools, rental and rescue on site. Hazards: boats and jet-skis sharing the lagoon are the main danger — keep clear of channels and motor traffic; launch/landing patches at the shore are small even though the water area is big, so it gets congested on windy weekends. Wind at the launch is side-onshore but can be gusty/offshore-leaning on certain directions near the hills. The lagoon also has water-quality/pollution issues from wastewater — avoid swallowing water and don't treat it as a swimming spot.
