Garopaba

About This Spot

Garopaba is a popular surf town on Santa Catarina's southern coast, ~1hr south of Florianópolis. Two distinct riding options sit close together: the open ocean beach (Praia de Garopaba / Praia da Ferrugem) and, ~5-8km south toward Imbituba, the Lagoa de Ibiraquera — the area's standout kite spot. Wind: best in the Brazilian summer (Nov-Mar) with NE thermal wind blowing roughly 3-4 days/week at 15-30kt; it builds in the afternoon and tends to be gusty. Winter (Jun-Aug) brings S/SW frontal wind at ~15-20kt — heavier and more consistent in direction but sporadic (driven by cold fronts, not daily thermals). Roughly 70% of windy days are NE, 30% S. Reliability is moderate, not a sure thing like NE Brazil; come with a forecast window, not fixed dates. Water & skill: The Lagoa de Ibiraquera is flat, shallow (~0.5-1.7m) and largely obstacle-free — excellent for beginners, freestyle and progression, all levels. Launch from sandy/grassy edges with free parking; minimal beach-user conflict; tide doesn't matter inside the lagoon. The ocean side is a wave beach with chop and breakers frequently over 2.5m, suited to intermediate-to-advanced wave riders only. Hazards: on the ocean, shore-break, larger sets and longshore current demand experience and self-rescue confidence; NE here is side-onshore/cross-onshore so it pushes you along the beach. The lagoon has very shallow patches (watch fins/lines on low spots). Summer means heavy crowds in this tourist/surf town — both in the water and on launches — so weekday/early sessions are calmer. Local kite schools operate around the lagoon (e.g. near Barra de Ibiraquera). Bring lighter and medium kites (9-12m typical) to cover the wind range.
