About This Spot

Cumbuco is a flat-to-choppy trade-wind machine on the NE Brazilian coast, ~35 km NW of Fortaleza, and one of the most reliable kite destinations on earth. WIND: SE trade winds blow side-/side-offshore in the morning and clock to side-onshore from roughly 11:00, peaking late morning to ~15:00 then easing toward sunset. Season runs July–February; the gold window is August–December with near-100% wind days at a steady 16–28 kn (gusting ~30), powering 7–12 m kites. June–January still gives 90%+ wind. Feb–June is the rainy/low season: lighter and less reliable (10–18 kn, ~55% wind days), bring 12 m+. WATER: The main 6 km town beach is open ocean — choppy at high tide with small wind-swell, flattening into flat zones and small waves over sandbanks at low tide; occasional real swell enters on full/new moon. The signature spot is Lagoa do Cauípe, a flat shallow lagoon ~5–7 km up the beach separated from the sea by a sandbar — butter-flat, waist-deep in places, ideal for learning and freestyle (a classic downwinder from town). More flatwater lagoons lie further out at Taíba (~25 km) and Paracuru (~40 km). SKILL: Suits everyone — beginners thrive in Cauípe and low-tide flats; intermediates/freestylers get glassy water; wave riders find bump-and-jump and occasional swell on the beach. LAUNCH/ACCESS: Huge sandy beach with easy launch and abundant kite schools/storage; 30–40 min from Fortaleza airport; buggies/4x4 shuttle riders between spots and lagoons. HAZARDS: Side-offshore mornings mean a gear/rescue plan matters — ride with others, especially solo. Strong longshore drift and big tidal range change beach width and wave size hour to hour; check the tide. Heavy weekend crowds of swimmers, kiters and tourists on the town beach demand constant lookout and right-of-way discipline. Lagoa do Cauípe can get very busy and has shallow sections/sandbars; the lagoon mouth and adjacent ocean have current.
