Canoa Quebrada

About This Spot

Canoa Quebrada is a former hippie village turned tourist town on Ceará's east coast, ~150 km (2–2.5 h) east of Fortaleza and ~11 km from Aracati's Dragão do Mar airport. It sits beneath dramatic red sandstone cliffs and is a solid base for the wind-rich beaches east of Fortaleza, though it's a secondary kite spot rather than a flat-water dream. Wind: classic Ceará trade-wind (E/ESE) season runs roughly July–January, most reliable Aug–Nov when you can ride nearly every day. Strength here is more modest than at Cumbuco/Cauipe to the west — typically 14–22 kt at peak, so bring a 12 m (and larger, 12–16 m, in the shoulder months). Wind tends to be sideshore in the morning and swings more onshore in the afternoon; at Canoa itself it can blow almost straight onshore, which is the main limitation. Feb–June is the rainy/light-wind off-season (wind drops ~50%) — don't travel for kiting then. Water & conditions: open Atlantic beach with chop and a shorebreak, not flat. It's tide-dependent — high tide shrinks the beach badly and crowds the launch against the shorebreak; low tide opens up plenty of riding space. Warm water year-round (25–30°C), no wetsuit. Launch & access: the recognized kite beach is near the cemetery, past Restaurante Bom Motivo — sandy with little boat traffic. Plenty of pousadas and restaurants in town. Skill level: best for intermediate–advanced; the onshore shorebreak and chop make it a poor beginner spot. For flat water, do the short downwind/transfer to the Rio Jaguaribe mouth at Fortim (~10 km, flat sideshore at morning low tide) or the Parajuru lagoon (beginner/freestyle), and Pontal de Maceió for calm freeride. Hazards: shorebreak and chop, onshore wind component, local fishermen and their nets (give them room), beach spectators near the launch, and a tight beach at high tide. Crowds are low compared with the western Fortaleza spots.
