About This Spot

Camocim is a working fishing town at the mouth of the Rio Coreaú on Ceará's far northwest coast, the classic finishing point of the Jericoacoara–Tatajuba–Ilha do Amor downwind run. The main riding is the flat, shallow water of the Coreaú delta directly opposite town and along Praia do Maceió (~12 km away across the river mouth), reachable by boat/4x4 transfer or as the end of a downwinder. Wind: this stretch (Preá to Camocim) is regarded as having the most wind days and strongest wind in the Fortaleza/Ceará region. The trade-wind season runs roughly July–February, blowing side-shore to side-onshore (E/SE). Early season (June–August) is lighter, around 11–18 kn (4 Bft); the prime window is September–December when it regularly hits 20–27+ kn and is near-daily. Expect to be on 9–12 m most days in peak season. January/February eases off again. Water & level: butter-flat to light chop in the protected delta at the right tide, with shallow standing areas — excellent for freestyle, foiling, and progressing beginners/intermediates. Outside the delta along the open coast there's small wind-driven chop/swell. Tide matters: launch comfortably at low/mid tide on exposed sandbanks; at high tide water floods up toward the palms and usable beach shrinks, so check the tide table. Hazards: the river mouth has real tidal current — don't get flushed seaward of the delta, and respect the channel where boats run. Side-shore orientation keeps it relatively safe (no strong offshore), but the open ocean is committing if your gear fails. Crowds are minimal compared with Jeri/Cumbuco — it's remote, with limited rescue. Bring everything you need; few dedicated schools operate in town itself versus Jericoacoara.
