About This Spot
Caburé is a thin sand peninsula at the mouth of the Rio Preguiças, on the east bank directly opposite Atins, on the edge of Lençóis Maranhenses. Same trade-wind engine as Atins but quieter and more remote. Note: the commonly cited -2.65/-43.37 is wrong; the village/beach sits at ~-2.577/-42.698. Wind: steady SE/E side-shore trades, season ~June/July to January, blowing daily and very reliably; 15-25 kt typical, building to 25-30 kt in the Oct-Dec peak. Most consistent Aug-Nov. 7-10 m kites are the norm. Water: two faces. The river/lagoon side and the sandbanks that surface at low tide opposite the river mouth give large flat, shallow, warm (~27C) pools, excellent for freeride, learning and freestyle on the right tide; high tide favors foiling upwind to the mouth. The ocean side is open Atlantic with chop and small-to-moderate wind swell. Skill: all levels in the flats at low tide, but the spot rewards intermediates+ who can hold upwind and read tides. Launch & access: wide, empty sand beach, sandy bottom (no reef/rocks). No road in, no real kite school on the peninsula, so it is mostly reached by boat across the Preguiças from Atins (~10 min), or by 4x4 from Paulino Neves/Barreirinhas plus a crossing; it is also the classic downwind finish from Atins/Mandacaru. Bring your own gear and be self-sufficient. Hazards: strong tidal/river current at the Preguiças mouth is the main danger, getting flushed toward open sea on the ebb is a real risk, so do not drift downwind of the point. Sandbanks shift and dry/flood with the tide, check the tide table before launching. Remote with minimal rescue or medical support, so kite with others. Crowds are low; sun, wind exposure and isolation are factors, carry water.
