Barra Grande is a sandy-street fishing village in the municipality of Cajueiro da Praia, Piauí (~78 km from Parnaíba, ~4–5 h by car/4x4 from Fortaleza), and one of NE Brazil's most reliable kite destinations. WIND: trade-wind season runs July–January/February, with the strongest, most consistent days in September, October and November (near-100% wind probability). Typical strength 18–30 kt, gusting to 35 kt in peak months; February–June is the off-season (~10–20 kt, ~50% probability). Direction is side-onshore (SE/E), so a downed kite drifts you back to the beach — a key safety plus for beginners. Wind builds through the afternoon; mornings can be lighter. WATER: in front of the village it's shallow and flat-to-choppy depending on tide — flatter and pool-like at low tide, choppier with small shore-break waves (up to ~1–2 m) as the tide fills. A 2–4 km downwinder west toward Praia do Macapá / Rio Camurupim reaches a huge tidal lagoon and river mouth with butter-flat, sandbank-dotted water, ideal for freestyle and learning. SKILL: excellent for beginners and intermediates (kite schools, shallow water, forgiving wind); freeriders and freestylers get flat lagoons, and there's enough swell offshore for some wave play. LAUNCH/ACCESS: launch directly from the wide village beach; plenty of pousadas and schools. HAZARDS: tide planning is essential — the Macapá lagoon only works on the right tide, and the return to Barra Grande is a long upwind grind (20–40 min) often crossing the Rio Camurupim; many riders shuttle back by donkey cart/buggy. Watch for sandbanks and shallow patches at low water, occasional crowds at the main launch in high season, and strong tidal current near the river mouths. Warm water (26–30°C), no reef. A common stop on Brazil downwind safaris.
