Barra do Cunhaú is a quiet fishing village on the south coast of Rio Grande do Norte (Canguaretama municipality), at the mouth of the Rio Cunhaú, ~75–90 km / 1h15 south of Natal airport and just 8 km from Pipa. It's a classic Brazilian combo spot: a large flat-water lagoon at the river mouth plus ocean wave riding outside. Wind: steady SE/ESE trade winds blowing side-onshore, so it's forgiving for self-rescue. Season runs roughly July to January, with the strongest, most reliable wind July–November (typically 15–25 kt, regularly powering 9–12 m kites). August–November are the peak/most-constant months; December–January is lighter and less consistent (~10–18 kt). Roughly 130+ kiteable days a year. Sunny and warm year-round (air 28–32°C, water 26–28°C — boardshorts). Water: behind the reef and in the back of the lagoon you get butter-flat water that holds all day, ideal for freestyle, foiling and learning. Outside the rivermouth there are waves — mellow, smaller ones on the south/beach side good for first wave-riding, and faster, hollower, cleaner waves on the north side for intermediate/advanced. Tide matters: low tide exposes a second standing-depth flat area behind an outlying reef at the rivermouth and is best for beginners; high tide narrows the beach and beefs up the shorebreak. Skill level: beginner-friendly in the lagoon; intermediate–advanced for the ocean break. Schools, rental and downwinders available in the village. Hazards: scattered coral reef and rocks (especially toward Bahia Formosa and at the ocean break) — watch your lines and kite at low tide; current at the river mouth can pull you toward the sea, so respect the channel. Generally uncrowded and peaceful. No major regulations, but respect local fishermen, boats and marine life.
