Atins

About This Spot

Atins is a remote fishing village turned kite mecca at the mouth of the Rio Preguiças, on the edge of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Note: it sits at ~-2.57, -42.74 (river-mouth estuary), not the often-quoted -2.52/-43.12. Wind: steady SE trade winds, cross-/cross-onshore, blow July–January with ~95% reliability at 15–30 kt all day. Peak is October–November, regularly 25–35 kt — bring an 8–10m. February–June is the off season (lighter ~10–18 kt, ~55% windy, many camps closed). Cross-onshore direction means gear blows back to the beach, a safety plus for learners. Water: the star is the huge flat-water lagoon formed by the estuary's shifting sandbanks. At low tide turquoise knee-to-waist-deep flats emerge — glassy, sandy bottom (no rock/reef), ideal for freestyle and beginners. At high tide the area gets choppier and the river mouth runs faster. The Atlantic side offers chop and small-to-mid waves for those wanting to ride swell, plus epic downwinders along the dune coast. Water is warm year-round (~26–28°C), boardies only. Level: suits everyone — protected flats for first-timers and schools, big space and waves for advanced riders. Launch & access: two main launches on Atins beach open onto the lagoon; the river-mouth flats sit a short walk from the village/guesthouses. Getting there is the catch: fly São Luís, drive ~3–4h to Barreirinhas, then ~1–2h by 4x4 or boat. No paved roads, sand tracks, cash-based economy, sunset ~18:00. Hazards: tidal current at the river mouth (don't drift downwind into the channel/ocean), constantly moving sandbanks, isolation/limited rescue, and early darkness. Kiting inside the national park dunes/lagoons is regulated by IBAMA and requires a guide. Beaches are uncrowded.
