Arraial do Cabo sits on Brazil's Cabo Frio cape, one of the windiest stretches of Rio de Janeiro state. Two very different setups share the name. The ocean beaches (Praia Grande, Praia do Forno, Praia dos Anjos, Pontal) offer postcard turquoise water but are exposed: expect chop to real swell, side-on to onshore E/ESE/SE wind, and gusts off the headlands - intermediate-to-advanced territory. For learning and flat water, schools run on the nearby Lagoa de Araruama (Monte Alto), a warm, shallow, flat lagoon ~20-30 min away that is genuinely beginner-friendly and side-shore in the prevailing E winds. Season: the reliable window is roughly August to March, peaking spring/summer (Sep-Feb) when thermal-reinforced E/ESE trades blow most afternoons. Cabo Frio's long-term average is ~10 kt with frequent 18-27 kt afternoons in season; winter (May-Jul) is lighter and less consistent, with cold-front S winds the main alternative. Typical kite size 9-12 m in season. Water: lagoon is flat and shallow; the open beaches range from cross-shore chop to head-high swell at Praia Grande/Forno. Note Arraial's famous upwelling (ressurgencia) - the sea can turn surprisingly cold (~18-20C) even in summer, so a shorty/wetsuit top is wise on the ocean. Hazards & access: the ocean beaches get very crowded with swimmers, divers and tour boats - Arraial is a major diving/boat-trip hub, so heavy boat traffic and busy beaches limit safe ocean riding in high season; ride early or pick the lagoon. Watch rocky points/reef at Forno and Pontal, offshore-component gusts near cliffs, and strong gust spread. Lagoon launches are easy and sandy; ocean launches are tighter and tide-affected. Best for travellers wanting flat-water lagoon progression plus scenic ocean sessions for confident riders.
