San Pedro (Ambergris Caye)

About This Spot

Belize's most popular and most beginner-friendly kite destination, on the east (windward) side of Ambergris Caye at the town of San Pedro. WIND: NE–ESE trade winds, season runs roughly November–July with the most reliable, cleanest wind in the dry season (best Jan–April, plus a strong June). Typical riding days are 15–25 kt, often building after lunch; mornings can be lighter. Note that long-run annual averages are modest, so expect good-but-not-guaranteed wind rather than a sure-thing daily spot — bring a quiver (8–12m). Nov–Jan cold fronts bring 20 kt side-/offshore from the N, when riders move to the lagoon (west) side. Aug–Sept are the calmest months and overlap hurricane season. WATER: A barrier reef ~3/4 mile offshore creates a shallow, flat-to-lightly-chopped lagoon between reef and island — great for learning, freestyle and cruising. Reef side has more chop/small waves and heavy water-taxi traffic. The west/leeward side (Secret Beach, MJ's/Sandbar) is butter-flat shin-to-waist water but usually offshore — only ride it with boat support or in N/E winds. SKILL: Ideal for beginners and intermediates progressing on flat water; advanced riders get flat-water freestyle and downwinders. LAUNCH/ACCESS: Boca del Rio (north end of town) is the safest, most organized launch; schools (KiteXplorer, Sailsports Belize) offer lessons, rentals and rescue boats. Sandbar/lagoon sessions need a paid boat shuttle. HAZARDS: shallow coral/reef and uneven docks (watch nails/planks), boat and water-taxi traffic near town, offshore wind on the leeward side (don't ride without support), small local kiter community/limited self-rescue options, and heavy sargassum seaweed on the east shore roughly Mar–Oct that fouls launches and smells — dry season is cleaner.
