About This Spot

Boca Grandi is Aruba's premier kite spot, a remote sandy bay on the windward southeast coast just north of the Seroe Colorado lighthouse near San Nicolas — far from the calm leeward tourist beaches (Fisherman's Huts/Hadicurari). It works on the Caribbean trade winds, which blow side-/cross-onshore from the NE–ENE and are exceptionally reliable. Best and strongest from roughly January through August (peak May–July), often 20–30 kn and frequently overpowered; many days build through the afternoon, picking up around 4pm into sunset. September–November and early December are the lightest, least reliable months. Typical kite sizes 7–10m in season. Water is open Atlantic and predominantly choppy/medium-swell — this is not a flat-water freestyle lagoon. The bay holds wind-driven chop and shorebreak (~0.5–1m); a partially submerged barrier reef offshore gives somewhat smoother, more sheltered sections inside it, while crossing it upwind opens up 1–2m wave/kicker terrain for jumping and wave riding. Best suited to confident intermediate and advanced riders comfortable being self-reliant. Hazards: strong currents (you can get pushed offshore/downwind), shallow rocky/coral reef sections that can damage gear or injure you, shorebreak on launch/land, and side-onshore (not pure onshore) angle. Crucially there is no rescue, no kite school presence, and no safety cover at the spot — if you can't self-rescue and body-drag upwind, don't go out. Launch is off the open sandy beach with plenty of space and few crowds. Access is by car only (no public transport); a 4x4 is recommended as 2WD can bog in soft sand. It's roughly a 40–50 min drive from the Noord/Palm Beach hotel zone. No infrastructure whatsoever — bring all your own water, food, shade, and a full repair/safety kit. Worth the trip for wind-sure, uncrowded riding, but go with a buddy.
