About This Spot

Patagonian gulf spot on Golfo Nuevo, a large semi-enclosed bay that gives clear, relatively shallow water near shore and a sheltered fetch. The coordinates mark the city's costanera (Playa del Centro), the default launch; locals shift between beaches along/around the gulf because within ~70 km you can find a beach working for almost any wind direction. Wind: dominant flow is W–WSW (the classic Patagonian/Pampero westerlies), reinforced by afternoon thermals. Best season is the southern summer, roughly Nov–Feb, with Dec the windiest month; spring (Oct) and early autumn also deliver. Long-term averages are moderate (annual mean ~12 kn) but windy days commonly hit 18–28 kn with gusts to ~35 — expect gusty, punchy Patagonian air rather than smooth trade wind. Water state: near shore it's flat-to-light-chop and shallow (good for learning and freeride); chop builds quickly once it's blowing, and exposed beaches can pick up short swell. Skill level: beginner-friendly at low tide on the shallow inner beaches and several schools operate here, but the gusty wind, big tidal range and cold water make solid intermediate self-rescue skills valuable. Hazards: very large Patagonian tidal range — ride low tide for a wide beach and watch the flood; W/WSW wind blows offshore/cross-offshore at the main city beach, so choose your beach by direction and don't go downwind of land with offshore flow; cold water year-round (4/3–5/4 wetsuit, boots/hood in winter); some beaches have rocks/reef sections and there can be current near points. Major seasonal note: southern right whales are in Golfo Nuevo roughly Jun–Dec (often very close to shore at El Doradillo) — keep clear, give them space, and respect local protection rules. Crowds are low.
