About This Spot

Patagonian beach-break spot on the Atlantic, the seaside resort of Rawson (~6 km from town) at the mouth of the Río Chubut. It's officially Chubut's "Capital Provincial del Surf," and that tells you what to expect on the water: an exposed, open-ocean beach with intense shore-break, chop and short-period swell (waves commonly ~1–1.5 m). This is a wave/chop spot, not a flat-water lagoon — better suited to intermediate and advanced riders comfortable in moving water; beginners can take lessons here but will fight the surf and gusty Patagonian gradient wind. Wind: like most of Patagonia, it blows hard and often. The most reliable, strongest winds run spring–summer (roughly Oct–Mar), peaking Dec–Feb — the Kite Tour Patagónico is held here in February, confirming midsummer as prime. Prevailing flow is W/SW (the classic Patagonian westerly) with thermal S/SE sea breezes also working. Pros rate the wind as "constant." Note the geometry: the coast faces roughly E/SE, so W and SW winds are offshore to cross-offshore — fun and powered up but a real get-blown-out-to-sea hazard; S/SE breezes are the safer cross-on directions. Always check you can stay in range and ride with a buddy. Water is cold year-round (winter ~10–11°C; summer cool) — a 4/3 or thicker wetsuit, hood/boots in shoulder seasons, is essential; hypothermia is a genuine risk after a long swim. Other hazards: gusty, sometimes overpowered wind, shore-dump on the launch, current and changing depth near the river mouth, and a remote location with limited on-water rescue. Marine life (Patagonian dolphins, sea lions) is present. Access via Av. Antártica Argentina from Rawson; wide sandy beach gives plenty of launch space, but it draws surfers/SUP crowds in summer, so pick an uncrowded stretch.
