About This Spot

Patagonian Atlantic spot on the San Matías Gulf, near San Antonio Oeste. Two distinct riding areas matter: (1) the Las Grutas town beaches/'bajadas' (e.g. 3ra Bajada), open to the gulf with small wind-chop to short swell and a backdrop of cliffs/caves; and (2) La Mar Grande / the ría of San Antonio Oeste, ~15 km away, a vast shallow tidal flat that is the real draw for kiting — knee-deep far offshore even near high tide, making it excellent flat-ish, butter-shallow water for beginners and freestyle. Wind: Patagonia is reliably windy, strongest and most consistent in spring–summer (roughly Oct–Mar), which is also the busy warm-water season. Annual mean is moderate (~12 kt) but thermal/synoptic reinforcement regularly brings kiteable, gusty days. Onshore/cross-onshore directions (SE, S, SW, E) are the workable ones at La Mar Grande and the ría; N wind is rideable at high tide. The prevailing W can blow offshore and gusty — treat W days with caution. Water & tides: This coast has a huge Patagonian tidal range, so the launch zone shifts dramatically — at low tide water recedes far and exposes flats/rocks; plan sessions around the tide table and incoming/high water. Water is genuinely warm for Argentina in mid-summer but cold (~12 °C) the rest of the year — bring a full wetsuit outside peak summer. Skill level: Beginner-friendly on the shallow ría/La Mar Grande flats; the open gulf beaches suit intermediates handling chop and tide. Schools operate (Costa Kite Sur, est. 2017; Costa Sur / Iván Carpintero) with gear and lessons. Hazards: large tidal range and fast-draining flats, rocks/cliffs and caves at the town beaches at low tide, possible offshore gusty W wind, channel current in the ría, cold water in the off-season, and enforced parking rules at La Mar Grande. Small, friendly local crew — low crowds.
